Sport and Fitness have been central to my entire life, in one way or another and to this day, remain a fundamental part of what I love to do. As an ex-ENGLAND International Volleyball player, I had trained and competed at the highest level. As a former soldier, I have always understood the need to maintain some level of fitness and yet at 53 years of age, and after 30 years of working in the food manufacturing industry, my weight had crept up to 19 stone 4lbs. Whilst still physically active, I was overweight, with a BMI bordering on Obese! I remember asking myself, ‘How on earth did that happen?’

One year later, with effort, determination and a plan set across several key areas, including my food consumption, exercise regime and lifestyle changes, I was down to 13 stone 8lbs and back to my old lean self.

At 53, that wasn’t as easy a journey as it would have been 30 years ago; the human body responds very differently to that of an energetic 21 year old. But what was interesting as I pushed myself, was that on many occasions I was approached by my peers and younger gym members, asking me the same question over and over again, “Could you please show me how ….?” or “Could you train me?” Clearly I wasn’t qualified to do so then – but I am now.

REPS Level 3 qualified and with further qualifications in Advanced Nutrition, I am focussing on (but not limited to) the Over 50 age bracket, particularly those who are clinically diagnosed as obese or that have on-set Type 2 diabetes.

I still train hard, across a series of disciplines, including Aikido where I am qualified as a Level 1 Coach with the British Aikido Board and the British Aikido Association. And with that level of training comes discipline and understanding. An understanding of the issues an older body can throw at you and how to deal with them. I understand the aches and pains associated with ageing and the limitations of an older body – BUT I also know what it can do with correct training, good diet and a changed and disciplined lifestyle.

Lastly, as a former Company Director, Main Board Director and Shareholder/Owner of a business, I know how ‘life and work’ can get in the way of everything else, how the stresses of a working life can take their toll. So my approach is a HOLISTIC approach that considers Lifestyle, Stress Management, Diet and Nutrition as well Fitness Instruction and 1-2-1 Personal Training. In that measure of ‘Life Experience’, research has shown there are very few PT’s to match.

For me, my learning doesn’t stop there, and I am undertaking Continuous Personal Development across a number of areas that will allow me to progress to a REPS Level 4 PT specialising in GP Referral, Obesity & Diabetes in greater detail as well as Strength and Conditioning.

I am also endorsed as an approved Personal Trainer by the Organisation ‘Fitness Over Fifty’.

Bitterne Leisure Centre has been my ‘home’ gym for the past 4 years too and I have previously worked as a Fitness Instructor at both Bitterne and Chamberlayne Leisure Centres.
